Riding the Wave: Yoga for the Stages of Menopause with Mary Beth Ray

  • Green Yogi Telegraph 2807 Telegraph Avenue Berkeley, California, 94705 United States (map)

"You can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf." — Jon Kabat-Zinn

Menopause unfolds gradually, over years, not all at once. It affects your body, your breath, your attention, your sense of self, and your relationship to joy. Several layers of who you are shift during this time, and the changes can overlap.

Most of us were never taught what to expect. And much of what's offered, quick fixes, fear-based messaging, vague platitudes, doesn't go very deep.

This workshop takes a different approach.

Through the lens of yoga therapy and the ancient pañcamaya model, which recognizes five interconnected dimensions of the human system, we'll spend an afternoon mapping this transition, moving through it somatically, and exploring a question menopause often raises: who are you becoming?

What we'll explore together:

The science. What's actually happening in your body, nervous system, and brain during this transition.

The pañcamaya model. An Indian anatomy and physiology framework from early Upaniṣad texts that sees you as a whole system: body, breath, mind, behavior, and emotions. We'll map where menopause touches each layer.

Yoga therapy practice. Movement, breath, and awareness practices designed for this life stage, accessible to all levels, structured to move through each dimension of the model.

Identity and emotional wellbeing. An often overlooked layer: what are you releasing, and what's becoming possible?

Community. Time with others navigating similar terrain.

This workshop may be for you if:

  • You are in perimenopause, menopause, or post-menopause

  • You are a yoga practitioner whose practice feels like it no longer fits

  • You are a yoga teacher who wants to better understand and serve students in this transition

  • You're looking to understand this experience more fully, not just manage it

This isn't a promise to eliminate symptoms. It's a space to understand what's happening, move with it skillfully, and leave with tools, clarity, and community.

This workshop recognizes gender expansiveness, and welcomes yogis of all gender identities whose bodies experience the stages of menopause. Workshop material will be presented in gender neutral language to acknowledge gender diversity. If you have any ideas or comments on how to make the series more queer/trans inclusive please don't hesitate to reach out!

Please bring your own snack. We'll pause mid-afternoon for community connection time. Bring a journal.
